Mechanical seals are devices that are used to provide a seal at the point of entry or exit of a rotating shaft. Typically it is used to prevent the leakage of one high pressure fluid into a lower pressure fluid.

The Mechanical seal is a leakage control device. These pump seals work by combining systems and mechanisms to maintain a seal at potential point of leakage. Flat mechanical pump seal faces that are lapped within millionths of an inch and run against each other. Due to the flatness no leakage can get buy while one face rotates and one remains stationary. Other mechanical leakage paths are sealed using secondary seals such as o-rings and gaskets. The purpose of these pump seals is sealing the pump mechanically, and excluding contamination.
